A Town That Celebrates Twins

Jesus replied, "What is impossible for humans is possible for God." -- Luke 18:27

For more than a decade, Igbo-Ora, a city nestled 83 miles south of Lagos, Nigeria, has been hosting an annual festival to honor its abundance of twins. This year's celebration attracted more than 1,000 pairs of twins.

Despite its renown for twin births, Igbo-Ora's twin phenomenon remains a mystery. While no scientific consensus exists, locals speculate that dietary factors, particularly the consumption of amala, a yam flour delicacy, might play a role. Gynecologist John Ofem suggests that certain hormone-rich foods could contribute to the city's high rate of multiple ovulation.
Igbo-Ora boasts not only fraternal twins but also a notable number of identical twins, which points to the complexity of a twin phenomenon where both biological and cultural factors intertwine.

Taiwo Ojeniyi is a Nigerian student who attended the festival with his twin brother "to celebrate the uniqueness" of multiple births: "We cherish twins while in some parts of the world, they condemn twins," Ojeniyi said. "It is a blessing from God."
